Are you an avid knitter? Are you looking for something new and different to do with your weekend? Each Sunday a group of local knitters meet at The Exchange for a cuppa, chat and of course woolly fun and frolics! Christine the organiser of the group was kind enough to take some time out of her busy schedule and answer some questions..

Could you please tell us a bit about your background?

I'm originally from Denmark and I moved to Leicester in 2011 to start a PhD at the university of Leicester. Before Leicester I lived in the Netherlands for two years which is where/when I took up knitting.

How long have you been knitting and how did you get into it?

I started knitting because I ran out of socks! My granny used to knit woolly socks for the whole family. She died some years before and the socks I had left where all worn out, so I decided to take up sock-knitting as a homage to her and as a way for me to unwind after a stressful day. I told some of my friends about my new hobby and to my surprise they really liked the idea of sock knitting and asked me if I could teach them - so we started a knitting club that met in cafes.. because knitting goes really well with a nice cup of tea or coffee. Eventually I moved on from socks and now I knit pretty much everything. I'm currently working on a yak wool blouse.

How long has the group been running and why did you set it up?

When I moved to Leicester I joined a knitting group that met on Tuesday evenings but eventually decided that Sundays worked best for me. I couldn't find an existing Sunday group so I started one. I think that was about 5 years ago. We moved around a bit but eventually settled at The Exchange because we like the coffee and tea there (very important), it's got good light and the staff always make us feel welcome. Each week the staff make us a sign for our table, it's that sort of thing that makes you want to come back!

Is the group for experienced knitters or can beginners come along?

We're a mixed group with members of all ages and from quite different backgrounds. Some with years of knitting/crochet experience and some who are just starting out. Anyone who's interested in knitting or crochet is welcome to join us. Even if you haven't started yet but would like some advice on how to get started you are very welcome to join us for a coffee and a chat. We meet every Sunday at The Exchange from 2-4pm - just look for the table with yarn and needles!

We have a facebook group:
